Acoustic Ceiling Cost Per M², 2026 UK Price Guide
Supply-and-fit price ranges for acoustic suspended ceiling installation, how NRC rating drives the cost, and how acoustic compares to standard grid and MF, written by a commercial ceiling installer with 19 years of UK projects.
Quick Answer
Acoustic suspended ceilings cost £22–40/m² supply and fit in the UK in 2026. An acoustic ceiling uses the same fast, single-stage grid installation as a standard ceiling, with a tile upgrade that absorbs sound, so the extra cost over a standard grid ceiling (typically 20–40%) is almost entirely in the tile, not the labour. Use the free cost calculator for an instant project price, or the estimate tool for a GOOD/BETTER/BEST breakdown.
What is an acoustic ceiling and what drives the cost?
An acoustic ceiling is not a separate system, it is a standard grid ceiling fitted with tiles engineered to absorb sound rather than reflect it. The grid, hangers and installation are the same as a standard grid ceiling. What changes is the tile: denser mineral wool, a fleece or fabric facing, or a perforated finish that traps sound energy.
Because the labour is almost identical to a standard grid ceiling, the cost difference is driven by the tile specification, specifically the NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating. A tile rated NRC 0.55 costs little more than a standard tile; a premium tile rated NRC 0.90+ carries a real material premium. That is why acoustic ceilings span a wider price range than the tile choice alone would suggest.
Acoustic ceilings are specified wherever noise affects how a space works, open-plan offices, call centres, schools, healthcare waiting areas and restaurants. For the full application detail, see our guide on acoustic ceilings for open-plan offices.
Acoustic ceiling cost per m² in 2026
Indicative supply-and-fit rates for commercial acoustic ceiling installation in the north of England. Rates include grid, acoustic tiles, perimeter angle, hanger wire, fixings and labour to 3m ceiling height. They exclude VAT, M&E first-fix above the ceiling, and disposal of an existing ceiling.
| Project size | Cost per m² | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small (under 50m²) | £30–£40/m² | Higher rate reflects fixed setting-out and access costs spread over a smaller area. |
| Medium (50–150m²) | £25–£34/m² | Typical open-plan office or classroom with NRC 0.70–0.80 tiles. |
| Large (150m²+) | £22–£30/m² | Economies of scale reduce the per m² rate on larger office and education floors. |
| High-performance tile (NRC 0.90+) | Add 15–30% | Premium acoustic tiles, fabric-faced or baffle systems, ceilings above 3m, or restricted access. |
London and south-east rates are typically 10–15% above north of England figures. Use our suspended ceiling cost calculator for a project-specific estimate, or see the umbrella 2026 suspended ceiling cost guide for every system type.
NRC rating and what it costs
NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is the single number that most affects an acoustic ceiling's price. It measures the proportion of sound a tile absorbs, from 0 (fully reflective) to 1 (fully absorptive). Higher NRC means more sound-absorbing material in the tile, and a higher cost per m².
| NRC rating | Absorbs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50–0.55 | ~50% of sound | Standard mineral tile, general commercial, low noise sensitivity |
| 0.70 | ~70% of sound | General open-plan offices, classrooms, retail |
| 0.80–0.85 | ~80% of sound | Busy offices, meeting-heavy floors, healthcare waiting |
| 0.90–0.95 | ~90%+ of sound | Call centres, hard-floor spaces, critical speech privacy |
Specifying more NRC than a space needs wastes budget; specifying too little leaves the room acoustically uncomfortable and expensive to upgrade later, because it means lifting and replacing every tile. Matching the NRC to the room is the single most cost-effective decision on an acoustic ceiling.
What affects acoustic ceiling installation costs?
Tile NRC rating
The biggest driver. Moving from a standard NRC 0.55 tile to a premium NRC 0.90+ tile can add £8–£15/m² in material cost alone, with no change to the grid or labour.
Project size
Fixed costs, setting out, access equipment, mobilisation, spread over the total area. Larger office and education floors achieve the lower end of the per m² range.
Tile format
Standard 600×600 lay-in tiles are cheapest. Tegular (stepped-edge) tiles, concealed-grid formats, fabric-faced tiles and suspended acoustic baffles or rafts all add cost.
Ceiling height
Standard rates assume under 3m. Heights of 3–4m add around 15% for tower access; above 4m adds 25–30%. Higher ceilings also change the acoustic design, sometimes favouring baffles over a full tiled ceiling.
Access conditions
Occupied offices, working around other trades and out-of-hours installation to avoid disrupting a live floor all add labour time. Out-of-hours working carries a 20–40% premium.
Location
North of England rates are the base here. The Midlands runs 5–10% above; London and the south-east 10–15% above. Travel applies for projects beyond about an hour from our Bredbury base.
Where are acoustic ceilings specified?
Acoustic ceilings are specified wherever noise affects productivity, comfort, privacy or compliance:
- ▸Open-plan offices, The largest acoustic ceiling market. Absorbs speech noise across the floor plate, supports speech privacy and meets BREEAM acoustic credits. NRC 0.70–0.85 covers most offices.
- ▸Schools and education, Classrooms and halls must meet Building Bulletin 93 acoustic standards. Acoustic grid tiles are the standard route to compliance.
- ▸Healthcare, Waiting areas, consultation rooms and wards use acoustic tiles that also meet hygiene and fire requirements, reducing noise stress in clinical environments.
- ▸Restaurants and hospitality, Hard surfaces and full rooms make restaurants loud. Acoustic tiles or suspended acoustic rafts control reverberation without compromising the interior design.
How do I get a fixed price for an acoustic ceiling?
The most accurate way to get a fixed price is a site visit, in person or via a virtual survey. A virtual survey takes 15 minutes and can usually be arranged within 48 hours. Paul will confirm the ceiling area and height, discuss the noise problem you are solving, and recommend the right NRC rating so you are not paying for performance you do not need.
Before requesting a survey, it helps to have the following to hand:
- ✓Approximate ceiling area in m² (length × width is fine at this stage)
- ✓What the space is used for and the noise issue you want to solve
- ✓Any acoustic standard you must meet (BREEAM, BB93, a workplace spec)
- ✓Ceiling height and whether an existing ceiling needs removing
- ✓Access constraints, occupied building, restricted hours, site induction

- How much is an acoustic ceiling per m2?
- An acoustic suspended ceiling costs £22–40/m² supply and fit in the UK in 2026. The rate depends mainly on the tile's acoustic performance: standard mineral tiles with a modest NRC sit at the lower end, while high-performance tiles rated NRC 0.90+ push the material cost up. Larger projects sit lower in the range as fixed costs spread over more area. All prices exclude VAT at 20%.
- Why do acoustic ceilings cost more than a standard grid ceiling?
- The grid and installation labour are almost identical to a standard grid ceiling, the extra cost is in the tile. Acoustic tiles use denser mineral wool, fleece facings or perforated finishes to absorb sound, and cost more per m² than standard white mineral tiles. The premium over a standard grid ceiling is typically 20–40%, depending on the NRC rating you specify.
- What NRC rating do I need for an office?
- For a general open-plan office, tiles rated NRC 0.70–0.80 handle most speech-privacy and noise-control requirements. Call centres, meeting-heavy floors and spaces with hard floors benefit from NRC 0.90+. NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) runs from 0 to 1, the proportion of sound the tile absorbs. Standard tiles sit around 0.50; high-performance acoustic tiles reach 0.95.
- How does acoustic ceiling cost compare to grid and MF?
- A standard grid ceiling costs £18–35/m², an acoustic grid ceiling £22–40/m², and an MF ceiling £25–50/m². Acoustic sits between the two because it uses the same fast single-stage grid installation as a standard ceiling, with a tile upgrade for sound absorption. MF costs more because of its three-stage framework-board-plaster construction.
- What is included in an acoustic ceiling price per m2?
- A supply-and-fit acoustic ceiling price covers the acoustic tiles, the grid, perimeter angle, hanger wire, fixings and the labour to set out, install and cut in the ceiling. It excludes VAT (add 20%), M&E first-fix above the ceiling, specialist high-level access beyond standard hop-ups, and any acoustic wall treatment or floor coverings that also affect room acoustics.
