Grid Ceiling Installation Stockport

Stockport Suspended Ceilings supplies and installs grid ceilings across Stockport and Greater Manchester. A grid ceiling — also called a lay-in grid or exposed grid system — is the most common commercial ceiling in the UK: fast to install, easy to maintain and suitable for offices, retail units, schools and industrial spaces. We install standard 600x600 and 1200x600 lay-in grid systems with a full range of tile options. Free virtual survey within 48 hours.

When a grid ceiling is the right choice

A lay-in grid is the default commercial ceiling for good reason: it is fast, cost-effective and every tile lifts out for access to the services above. It is usually the right call when you are:

  • Fitting out a new office, retail unit or industrial space
  • Refurbishing and want a clean, modern finish on a budget
  • Replacing a tired, stained or dated existing ceiling
  • Somewhere that needs regular access to cabling, ductwork or pipework above
  • Adding acoustic, hygiene or fire performance without a solid ceiling
  • Working to a fixed budget and a tight programme

If you need a completely seamless, gridless finish instead, that is an MF ceiling. Not sure which suits the space? We will tell you on the survey.

Hung correctly, fixed to the soffit, guaranteed

A grid ceiling is only as safe as the way it is hung. The grid has to be fixed correctly to the structure above, the soffit, with the right hangers at the right centres for that building. Done properly it stays level and secure for the life of the ceiling. Done badly it sags, pulls away from the perimeter and can eventually fail, which in a school, office or public building is a safety risk, not just a cosmetic one.

Every ceiling we install is fixed correctly to the soffit and backed by a written 5-year guarantee. Our premium installations also include a yearly maintenance safety check, so the fixings, grid and tiles are inspected each year and a problem is caught before it becomes one.

And if you have been let down before by a contractor who did not turn up or walked off a half-finished job, we do the opposite: we show up when we say we will, coordinate with the other trades on site, and finish it clean.

What is a grid ceiling?

A grid ceiling (also called a suspended tile ceiling or drop ceiling) uses a metal grid suspended from the structural ceiling above. The grid creates a pattern of rectangular cells — usually 600x600mm or 1200x600mm — that hold ceiling tiles. Tiles drop into the grid and can be lifted individually to access services above without any structural work.

The grid itself is made from a combination of main runners (the long lengths), cross tees (shorter lengths spanning between main runners) and wall angles (the perimeter fixing). The whole system is level, accessible and simple to modify.

Which types of grid ceiling do we install?

Standard exposed grid

The most common option. Visible white or silver grid with mineral tiles. Used in offices, schools, retail and warehouses. Cost-effective, practical and widely stocked for future tile replacements.

Concealed grid

The grid sits behind a reveal in the tile edge, making it less visible. Cleaner appearance. Popular in reception areas and customer-facing environments.

Tegular grid

Tiles have a stepped edge that drops below the grid, giving a shadow line effect. More architectural appearance than flat tiles. Used in premium offices and retail.

Grid sizes and tile options

Standard grid comes in 600x600mm and 1200x600mm modules. The tile you drop into it is where the performance is decided, and we specify and supply from the main UK manufacturers, including Armstrong, Rockfon, Zentia, Knauf and Ecophon:

  • Standard white mineral tile, the cost-effective default
  • Acoustic high-NRC tile for offices, restaurants and schools
  • Humidity and moisture-resistant tile for kitchens and welfare areas
  • Anti-bacterial / vinyl-faced hygiene tile for healthcare and food prep
  • Fire-rated tile where the ceiling forms part of a fire compartment
  • Tegular (stepped) and square edge, in white or colour

Not sure what you need? We bring samples to the survey and specify the right tile for the room and its use.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a grid ceiling cost per m2?
The rate depends on tile specification, ceiling height and access, and larger areas work out cheaper per m². We also run a supply-and-fit offer from £20 per m² on qualifying projects of 50m² and over (book a free virtual survey to qualify). For a price on your specific job, use our instant estimate tool or book a survey. Prices exclude VAT.
How long does a grid ceiling take to install?
A standard office or retail space up to 100m2 takes one to two days. We can schedule work outside trading hours for occupied premises.
What tile options are available for grid ceilings?
Standard mineral white tile is the most common and the most cost-effective. We also install acoustic tiles, humidity-resistant tiles for kitchens and welfare areas, anti-bacterial tiles for healthcare environments, and fire-rated tiles where required. We carry samples and can advise on the right tile for your use.
Can you install grid ceilings around existing lighting and sprinklers?
Yes. We work around existing services and fit tiles and grid sections to accommodate them. Where ceiling-level services need to be dropped through tiles we can cut and trim accordingly.
What grid size is best for my space?
600x600 grid is standard for most commercial spaces. 1200x600 is common in larger open-plan areas and gives a less busy appearance. We advise on the best option for your room proportions during the site survey.
Do you supply as well as install?
Yes. We supply all materials including grid, tiles, hangers and perimeter trim. You do not need to source anything separately. Everything is included in the quoted price.
How is the grid fixed so it does not sag over time?
The grid is hung from the structure above (the soffit) on wire hangers at the correct centres for that building, and tied into the perimeter with wall angle. Hung correctly, it stays level and secure for the life of the ceiling. Hung badly, it sags and can eventually fail, which is why our installations are fixed properly to the soffit and backed by a written 5-year guarantee.
