What does a dropped ceiling contractor do?
A dropped ceiling contractor — also called a suspended ceiling contractor, false ceiling fitter or ceiling fixer — installs secondary ceiling systems below the structural soffit of a building. The system consists of a metal grid suspended from the structure above on wire hangers, with ceiling tiles dropped into the grid to create the finished surface. The void above conceals wiring, pipework, ductwork and building services while keeping them accessible through removable tiles.
In commercial construction, a dropped ceiling contractor works across fit-outs, refurbishments and new builds. The scope covers: surveying the space and specifying the correct system, supplying grid and tile materials, installing the framework at the correct level, cutting around penetrations, and handing over a finished ceiling ready for M&E second fix.
For larger commercial projects, a specialist contractor also advises on fire rating requirements (30, 60 or 120-minute systems), acoustic performance (NRC ratings), ceiling height constraints, access above and integration with lighting and ventilation layouts. The right specification at the survey stage avoids costly changes on site.
What dropped ceiling systems do we install?
Grid dropped ceilings
The standard commercial dropped ceiling — a visible metal grid holding 600x600 or 1200x600 mineral tiles. Cost-effective, practical and easy to maintain. Used in offices, retail units, schools and warehouses across Manchester and the North West.
Acoustic dropped ceilings
High-NRC tiles that absorb sound, reducing reverberation and improving the working environment. Specified on almost every open-plan office fit-out, and increasingly on restaurants, schools and call centres where noise control matters.
Fire-rated dropped ceilings
30, 60 and 120-minute fire-rated systems required by building regulations on commercial premises, escape routes and between-floor compartmentation. We install to manufacturer specification and provide building control certification.
MF dropped ceilings
A concealed metal framework with plasterboard or tile finish — no visible grid. The highest-specification dropped ceiling system, used in premium retail, hotel receptions, restaurant dining areas and high-quality office fit-outs.

How dropped ceiling installation works
Free virtual survey within 48 hours
We assess the space via video or photos — ceiling height, services above, specification requirements and access. No one needs to travel at this stage. Survey arranged within 48 hours of enquiry.
Fixed-price written quote
A fixed price covering all labour, materials, access equipment and waste removal. Not a rate — a number you can sign off. Issued promptly after survey.
Material specification and delivery
We specify the correct grid system and tile specification — standard, acoustic, fire-rated or MF — and arrange delivery direct to site.
Grid installation
Main runners are hung from the structural ceiling on wire hangers at the correct finished level. Cross tees are clipped in to form the grid. Wall angles are fixed to the perimeter.
Tile installation and cutting
Tiles are dropped into the grid working in rows. Perimeter tiles are cut to size. Penetrations for light fittings, sprinkler heads, grilles and columns are cut accurately during installation.
Inspection and 5-year guarantee
We inspect for level, alignment and tile fit before handover. Any snagging is resolved before we leave. A 5-year written guarantee is issued on completion.
Dropped ceiling, suspended ceiling, false ceiling — what's the difference?
The terms all describe the same installation. A dropped ceiling is a secondary ceiling suspended below the structural ceiling using a metal grid — called a drop ceiling, false ceiling, hung ceiling or suspended ceiling depending on context and region. The grid-and-tile system is the same regardless of which name is used.
In the UK commercial market, “suspended ceiling” is the most common trade term. “Dropped ceiling” and “drop ceiling” are used interchangeably, particularly in the North West. “False ceiling” is common in healthcare and education specifications. Whatever terminology appears in your drawings or specification, Stockport Suspended Ceilings installs it. Call 0161 524 9076 to discuss your project.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a dropped ceiling contractor?
- A dropped ceiling contractor installs secondary ceiling systems below a structural soffit using a suspended metal grid and ceiling tiles — also called drop ceilings, false ceilings or hung ceilings. The contractor supplies and fits the grid framework, wire hangers, wall angles and tiles, cutting around light fittings, sprinkler heads and other penetrations. For commercial work, a specialist dropped ceiling contractor will also advise on system type, fire rating requirements and acoustic performance.
- How much does a dropped ceiling contractor charge?
- Supply-and-fit rates for commercial dropped ceiling installation in the North West range from £25–£40/m² for a standard grid and tile system, £30–£48/m² for acoustic systems, £35–£55/m² for fire-rated systems, and £45–£65/m² for MF ceilings. Labour-only rates run from £12–£28/m² depending on system type. All figures exclude VAT at 20%. Height above 3.5m, restricted access and out-of-hours working all carry uplifts. We provide fixed-price written quotes after a free virtual survey.
- Do you install dropped ceilings for commercial clients?
- Yes — commercial clients are our only market. Stockport Suspended Ceilings has worked across national retail, healthcare, education, hospitality and industrial fit-outs for 19 years. Projects include Selfridges, Primark, Waitrose, Manchester Eye Hospital and WHSmith at Heathrow. We do not take on domestic work. All quotes are fixed-price and in writing.
- What areas do dropped ceiling contractors in Manchester cover?
- Stockport Suspended Ceilings covers Manchester city centre, Greater Manchester and the wider North West from our base in Bredbury, Stockport. Our service area includes Salford, Trafford, Tameside, Oldham, Rochdale, Bolton, Wigan, Bury, Hyde, Altrincham, Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Warrington and across Cheshire. No travel surcharges within Greater Manchester.
- What types of dropped ceiling systems do you install?
- We install four main systems: standard grid ceilings (exposed 600x600 and 1200x600 grid and tile), acoustic ceilings (high-NRC tile systems for offices, restaurants and schools), fire-rated ceilings (30, 60 and 120-minute rated systems for commercial premises and escape routes), and MF ceilings (concealed metal-framed plasterboard systems for premium retail, hotels and office receptions). We advise on the right system for each project during the free virtual survey.
- How long does dropped ceiling installation take?
- A standard commercial space up to 100m² takes one to two days for a grid and tile system. Larger areas are programmed individually. MF ceilings take longer due to the three-stage installation process (framework, boarding, plastering). We always agree a programme with the client before starting and can work outside trading hours for occupied retail and hospitality premises.
